According to 2012 estimates, about 2 million people live here.
But about 3 times as many people come to the city to perform Hajj in the month of Hijri Jilhajj.

It was in this city that Muhammad (pbuh) was born and it was here that he received the first revelation of the Qur'an (specifically, in the cave of Hera which is 3 km away from the city).

Muslims come here every year to perform Hajj and Umrah.

The Kaaba is located in the heart of Mecca.

It indicates the direction of their prayers.

The dynasty is still ruling in Mecca. The city has expanded manifold in the modern era.

Many improvements can be noticed in its infrastructure, roads, civic amenities etc.

The floor area of the building is the third largest in the world.

Many historical structures and archeological sites, such as the Aziad Fort, have been lost due to the expansion of the city.

Every year 15 million Muslims travel to Mecca. As a result, the city has become one of the major global cities in the world.

Non-Muslims are not allowed in the city.

Etymology and use of the word Mecca :

The translation of the Arabic word 'مكة' is known in English as "Mecca".

However, the Saudi government does not use this spelling.

They gave the English name of this city 'Makkah', which is closest to the pronunciation of the Arabic root word.

The Saudi government introduced the spell in the 1980s, but it has not gained worldwide popularity.

The official name of Makkah is Makkah al-Mukarramah (Bengali: মক্কা-আল-মুকাররমা, English: Makkah al-Mukarramah or Makkatu l-Mukarramah).

It means the revered Mecca. However, it is translated into English as the holy city of Mecca.

The word "Mecca" in English means a place that attracts a lot of people. In fact, the city attracts Muslims from all over the world.

Mecca was formerly known as "Bakka".

history..........

According to Islamic history, monotheism was practiced in the time of Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon him) but over time the people of Makkah started worshiping idols.

At the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in 570 AD, there were 360 idols of gods and goddesses.

Later, during the re-establishment of the monotheistic religion followed by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) / Hazrat Ismail (AS),

Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) removed those idols in 629 AD.

At the same time, the Hajj, which has been going on since the time of Hazrat Ishmael (AS), was maintained.

This is why many people think of it as a pagan practice, but in fact its source was much earlier.

Hubal, the deity of the Nabataeans of northern Arabia, Uzzah - they found a place in the Kaaba of Mecca and at one stage became the chief deity of the Meccans.
Sometimes the Kaaba or the black stone is seen as a symbol of femininity, according to some accounts, and in some ancient autobiographies the Kaaba is grammatically feminine.
Moreover, the Fertility Rite (worship that was performed to ensure male or female fertility) was very common in ancient Arabia.
One such Fertility Rite was to walk around the Kaaba completely naked.
At that time it was believed that it would increase the ability of women to give birth to children and the ability of men.

But people of all religions used to come from far and wide to circumambulate the Kaaba.
This practice existed long ago, still exists.
And since there was an unwritten rule that bloodshed was forbidden in Makkah, it was a very ideal place to do business without riots.
And the merchants of Makkah would prosper and prosper by trading with those who came during the Hajj season.
