VoiceView for Fire TV: Use VoiceView During First-Time Setup

VoiceView is a screen reader for Fire TV devices. It speaks on-screen text out loud as you navigate menu options and settings. You can also use VoiceView to help you set up your device.

Use Voice View During First-Time Setup

To get started with VoiceView on your Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote:

  • You first need to connect your Fire TV Stick to an HDMI port on your TV, and plug in the power adapter.
  • Then, insert the batteries included with your Alexa Voice Remote. You hear a single tone sound when your remote is ready to pair to your Fire TV stick.
  • Press the Home   button on your remote for up to 10 seconds to pair it to your device. On your remote, Home is the middle button located on the top row of three small buttons.
  • When the pairing process is complete, you hear a different, two-tone sound. This indicates that you can now turn on VoiceView.

Note: The Fire TV App is not supported.

 Turn on VoiceView

You can turn VoiceView on or off by holding down the Back   and Menu  buttons on your Fire TV remote at the same time for two seconds. On your remote, Back and Menu are the left and right buttons located on the top row of three small buttons.

You hear "VoiceView Ready" when the feature is enabled and ready to use. When you turn the feature off, you hear "VoiceView Exiting."

The first time you turn VoiceView on, a tutorial automatically opens with tips on how to use the feature and locate buttons on your Fire TV remote.

The first screen of the tutorial asks you to confirm that you intended to turn VoiceView on. To confirm, press the Play/Pause  button on your remote. You can also skip the tutorial by pressing the Skip/Fast-Forward  button. On your remote, Play/Pause is the middle button located on the bottom row of three small buttons, and Skip/Fast-Forward is the right button.

 VoiceView Navigation

While you navigate your Fire TV device, a green box highlights your current on-screen selection or location. VoiceView automatically speaks and/or describes what you've selected.

Pressing the Home   button on your remote opens the Fire TV Home screen. On your remote, Home is the middle button located on the top row of three small buttons. The Fire TV menu displays at the top of the screen.

On your remote, the large round ring toward the top is the directional keypad, which you can use to navigate by pressing the Left, Right, Up and Down keys.

 Review Mode

In addition to describing selectable navigation options and controls, VoiceView features an enhanced navigation mode, called Review Mode, that you can use to hear descriptions of all on-screen text.

Press and hold the Menu  button on your remote to turn Review Mode on or off. When Review Mode is on, the Left and Right buttons on your remote's directional keypad move between selectable navigation options, while the Up and Down buttons highlight other on-screen text, including video details like plot or cast information, customer ratings, headings, lists, and more.

Tip: VoiceView says "Item not selectable" if you try to select on-screen text like video details, headings, or lists.

Here are some additional tips and examples of how you can use VoiceView on your Fire TV device.

Press the Menu Button for VoiceView Tips & More Options

VoiceView provides usage tips and orientation descriptions to help you better understand the layout of certain user screens, and learn more about using VoiceView.

You can press the Menu  button on your remote to hear this information when it's available. You can also double-press the Menu  button to access more options available for your current selection.

Tip: While in Review Mode, you can use the Menu  button to have VoiceView spell out words.

 On-screen keyboard

When the Fire TV on-screen keyboard is open, VoiceView speaks out each character as you select it. On your remote, the large round ring toward the top is the directional keypad, which you can use to move Left, Right, Up and Down. Press the Select  button to enter a character. On your remote, Select is the large round button near the top, inside the directional keypad ring.

If you have a Fire TV remote with a Voice  button, you can use your voice to search for content. You can also use your voice to interact with Alexa. On your remote, Voice is the small button at the top with the "Microphone" icon. Press and hold Voice  and say what you're looking for.

To learn more about what Alexa can do, you can ask "Tell me what you can do" or go to Alexa on Fire TV.

 Playback Controls

On your remote, playback controls are located on the bottom row of three small buttons. Skip Back/Rewind  is the left button, Play/Pause  is the middle button, and Skip/Fast-Forward  is the right button.

While a Prime Video title is playing, double-press the Menu  button to access additional playback options, including Watch from Beginning, Subtitles and Captions, and Next Episode (for TV shows).

Tip: When VoiceView is speaking, you can still control video playback using the Skip Back/Rewind  and Skip/Fast-Forward  buttons. You can also silence VoiceView by pressing the Play/Pause button.

 VoiceView Settings

To view and manage VoiceView preferences:

  1. Open Settings from the Fire TV menu.
  2. Use the Right key on your remote's directional keypad to scroll to the Accessibility section (which is the third-to last selection).
  3. Select VoiceView, which is the second selection in the list.
From here you can manage the following options:

  • Speech Volume - Set a volume level for the VoiceView voice. Speech Volume defaults to 40% of device volume.
  • Sounds Volume - Set the volume level for the feedback sounds that VoiceView uses. Sounds Volume defaults to 40% of device volume.

  • Punctuation Level - Control which punctuation marks VoiceView reads aloud.

You can also use button combinations on your Fire TV remote to adjust the speech volume and speed for VoiceView:

Tip: To switch between Speech Rate and Speech Volume, press the Play/Pause button and the Right button at the same time again.
  3. Press the Play/Pause button and Up or Down buttons  at the same time to increase or decrease your setting. Repeat this step until your speech volume or speed are at your desired level.
